FORT BONIFACIO, Taguig City – Forty three members of the New People’s Army voluntarily surrendered to the Army’s 8th and 68th Infantry Battalions in Maramag, Bukidnon, on March 22, Saturday, coinciding with the 117th Anniversary of the Philippine Army.
The surrenderees were former members of the NPA’s Guerilla Front 6, North Central Mindanao Regional Committee (NCRMC), operating in the areas of Bukidnon.
The group also turned over 36 assorted firearms, to include M14 rifles, M16 rifles, Garand rifles, Cal .45 pistols, and homemade shotguns.
On March 24, an additional five former NPA rebels also yielded to the same Army troops. They also surrendered seven assorted firearms.
They are now undergoing custodial debriefing at the headquarters of the 8th Infantry Battalion in South Poblacion, Maramag, Bukidnon.
The Philippine Army believes that the AFP’s Internal Peace and Security Plan (IPSP) Bayanihan continues to gain headway with the surrender of the 48 former rebels.
It can be noted that all Army operations were guided by the IPSP Bayanihan which advocates for the whole-of-nation approach in achieving peace.
The surrender can also be attributed to the effective collaboration among various stakeholders like the local government units and officials who support the Army’s campaign for peace.
The surrender of the former rebels also indicates that peace could be achieved through “bayanihan”.
