CASTILLA, Sorsogon – An innocent civilian and an Army soldier were killed and another soldier was wounded when they were ambushed by members of New Peoples Army at 8 o’clock in the morning on April 29 at Brgy San Juan, Casiguran, Sorsogon.
The two Army soldiers of Alpha Company of 31st Infantry Battalion were on their way to Casiguran Municipal Hall onboard a motorcycle to coordinate with the concerned local government officials regarding the conduct of medical and dental mission at said municipality when they were sensely attacked by more or 15 rebel insurgents who belong to Larangan 1 of Komiteng Probinsyal, Sorsogon.
The names of the two soldier victims are still withheld pending the notification of their respective family regarding the incident. The civilian victim who was identified as a certain Mr Anthony Habalo, an employee of Casiguran Water District, was hit by stray bullets as he was also driving his motorcycle along the scene of the incident resulting to his instantaneous death.
Brigadier General Joselito E Kakilala, Commander of the 903rd Infantry Brigade based in Sorsogon Province strongly condemned the most recent attack of the rebels. He said that the rebel are again resorting to this kind of dirty tactics of attacking non-combatants such as the two unarmed soldiers and the innocent civilian, as their desperate move to get even with the debacles they recently suffered from the government troops.
The remains of the civilian victim and the soldier were brought to the Casiguran Municipal Police Station for proper disposition while the wounded soldier, who suffered minor gunshot wound in the palm, was brought to the nearest hospital for proper medical treatment.
“The NPA here in Sorsogon Province is now loosing the strenght and the capability to launch major tactical offensives against the government troops as their strenght is now diminishing and also their popular support is weaning. This is the very reason why they resort to treacherous and wary attacks such as what happened today. What is sad and unfortunate however is that an innocent civilian was killed as a result of said incident”, Brigadier General Kakilala said.
