Army Recovers High-powered firearms and landmines in Sorsogon Encounter

CAMP ELIAS ANGELES, Pili, Camarines Sur – A platoon under 1LT John Garcia and 1LT Rely Tapic of the 31st Infantry (Charge) Battalion, which is the main operating arm of the 903rd Infantry Brigade in Sorsogon, encountered more or less 25 armed elements of the Communist Terrorists under @OMIE, @ABE and @HAZEL of Larangan 1, KOMPROB SORSOGON in a 25-minute encounter at Sitio Kaperikuhan, Brgy San Isidro, Bulusan Sorsogon which resulted to the recovery of three (3) assorted high-powered firearms: one (1) M16 Rifle, one (1) M79 Grenade Launcher, one (1) KG9; one (1) Handheld ICOM Radio and three (3) Landmines (Improvised Explosives Device).

According to Colonel Cesar M Idio, the newly-installed Brigade Commander, prior to the engagement, the brigade received a text message from a concerned civilian that the communist terrorists (CTs) were collecting revolutionary taxes from the masses, and that the CTs were forcing the masses to give taxes and food stuffs, thereby frightening the local populace and forcing some of them to flee from their places of work. He immediately instructed his troops to sustain the combat operations and pursue the fleeing Communists Terrorists to ensure that they can no longer threaten the masses. The Brigade’s effort through the information of the concerned civilians is one of the outcomes of the whole-of-nation approach and people-centered approach as mandated in the AFP’s IPSP “Bayanihan” operational strategy.

Major General Yerson E Depayso reiterated and warned the NPAs who are losing their mass base support, thus, forcing and intimidating to coerce the poor folks in the barangays to give in to their demands; to stop their desperate acts which put innocent civilian lives in danger, and cause serious damage to their livelihood. He thanked and encouraged the cooperating residents of the said barangay to report all sorts of acts of the NPAs to the Philippine Army to put a stop in any illegal activities against our people.
