Lieutenant Colonel Alvin V Luzon, Commanding Officer of 53rd Infantry (MATAPAT) Battalion based in Guipos Town, Zamboanga del Sur identified the person as Annabelle Quijano alias YAN-YAN/JENELYN/MELISA/MICHELLE and a member of the Natarang Gerilya (Front Committee) KARA that operates in the towns of Zamboanga del Sur.
“The suspected female NPA member was apprehended by virtue of Seven (7) Warrant of Arrests (Criminal Case number 11128-2013 for Murder; 11129-2013 for Theft; 11130-2013 for Attempted Murder; 11135-2013 for Attempted murder; 11136-2013 Attempted Murder, 3296-G for Malicious Mischief and 11440-2014 for Multiple Frustrated Homicide). The string of cases filed against her is connected to numerous atrocities committed by her group in Zamboanga Peninsula.” Luzon said.
Luzon also added, “the female NPA was apprehended in Margosatubig hospital when she was rushed in the emergency room because of profuse bleeding due to miscarriage. Initially, she tried to recover at home but her situation required proper medical attention due to continuous bleeding. At this point, a civilian tipster who is a concern citizen gave information about her identity as an active NPA which led to her arrest. Currently, she continued to stay on the hospital and is given proper medical treatment. She was given a blood transfusion and now in stable condition.”
“We will ensure the safety and respect the human rights of the apprehended female NPA while receiving medical attention in a government hospital but she needs to answer all the charges filed against her in proper courts when time comes. As of now, the priority of the unit is to take care of her delicate condition. Evidently, her NPA group just left her on her own. It is a pity to learn how NPA quickly abandon their supposed comrades after she sacrificed everything to the NPA’s lost and irrelevant ideology,” he added.
Brigadier General Gerardo F Barrientos Jr AFP, Commander of 1st Infantry (TABAK) Division. “The latest apprehension of the suspected female NPA is another big blow to the NPA group in Zamboanga del Sur. As you recall strings of surrenderees and captured NPA’s in Zamboanga Peninsula happened in recent months, notable of which are the apprehension of top Female NPA cadre and the surrender of a recruited minor female NPA with M16 rifle. Slowly, the number of NPA is dwindling, and the NPA cadres are low morale.
