Camp Siongco, Awang, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao – An improvised explosive device (IED) was discovered on April 23 at a bridge in Brgy Meta, Datu Unsay, Maguindanao, just 50 meters away from the Charlie Company headquarters of the 34th Infantry Battalion, 8ID, PA.
Around 11:00 in the morning, a concerned civilian discovered a suspected IED near the bridge and informed the soldiers near the area.
The troops of 34IB together with the Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team of the Army immediately went to the scene and secured the suspected IED.
Upon intensive checking in the area, it was confirmed that the baggage contains explosive materials.
The IED was successfully disrupted by the EOD team and recovered an RPG warhead, improvised electric blasting cap, two 9-volt batteries, relay switch, and two battery holders with wire.
The successful recovery of the IED was due to the growing concern and awareness among the civilian populace. If it was not reported earlier, the IED could have caused harm to the civilian commuters and damage to the structure and further causing disruption of the flow of traffic in the area.
The incident clearly connotes that the help of civilians in giving reports will be beneficial in hindering the lawless/terror groups from successfully creating terror and havoc in the community.
