NSFA, Panacan, Davao City – Members of Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU) of Los Arcos Patrol Base in Brgy Los Arcos, Sibagat, Agusan del Sur under the 8th Special Forces Company recovered 5.2 kilograms unexploded Improvised Explosive Device (IED), two (2) meters wire and a blasting cap planted by NPA bandits along the populated area in Brgy. Magsaysay, Prosperidad of the same province at 10:30 a.m., May 4, 2015.
Concerned residents and local officials in the barangay who harbor anger at the NPA bandits, tipped off the said CAFGU unit about the unexploded IED at their vicinity. The responding CAFGU personnel immediately disarmed the IED in order to protect the populace in the area.
As of May 4, 2015, there are already twenty (20) unexploded IEDs recovered by the troops on security patrol in the Eastern Mindanao area, ten (10) of which were planted by the NPA bandit group along roads in populated areas since April 1, 2015.
It can be recalled that on April 1, 2015, a civilian was killed while seven (7) others were injured in an IED explosion along the road of Brgy. Mahayag, San Miguel, Surigao del Sur.
Moreover, on April 20, 2015, two (2) innocent civilians were wounded and still in critical condition as a result of an IED explosion that was perpetrated by NPA bandits along the national highway in Sitio Bagong Silang, Brgy San Vicente, Makilala, North Cotabato.
The continued manufacture and use of these IEDs are gross violations of the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law.
Meanwhile, Eastern Mindanao Command Commander Lt. Gen. Aurelio B. Baladad commended the local officials and residents who provided the information about the unexploded IED planted by NPA bandits in their village and to the CAFGU personnel who responded and disarmed the deadly IED.
“As long as there is cooperation from the residents and local officials, we are pretty sure that the safety and security of the populace and communities are easily emplaced”, Lt. Gen. Baladad said.
